The champagne and its region | Wine | An unusual cork

The champagne bottle stoppers, or cork, is an essential element for wine preservation. It must provide perfect tightness, and at the same time resist the extremely high pressure of the carbon dioxide.
In fact, the storing of the bottles in a horizontal position is necessary in order to allow the champagne to stay in contact with the cork and in order to avoid the cork drying out and losing its sealing capacity.

The champagne bottle stopper is made of cork. It has a cylindrical shape before being put in place into the bottleneck. Afterwards, however, it will take on its specific shape, which is well known to everybody. If the storage time is longer, it will become a "peg stopper", as its lower part will become smaller and will lose its elasticity.
The cork wire is on the top to keep the cork in place.
